When the last branch went, for these 129 places
Each bar counts the places on this map whose last branch went in that year: the first June with no branch, with none in any later June to 2026. It is not every closure in Australia that year. Some other places lost a branch and later got one back. They are not on this map. Click or tap a bar to see that year on the map.
How to read the map
Each white dot is one place. The dot sits where its 2017 branches were. It appears in the June from which the place had no branch. A larger pink dot marks the places that had no branch from the June you chose.
The slider is not a new count for each year. An earlier June shows only places from the June 2026 list. Each one appears in the first June it had no branch.
The shading of a region shows how many of this study's places in it had lost their last branch by that June. Darker means more places. It does not show risk or how many people live there.
Striped grey regions are big-city areas. Every one is in an ABS Greater Capital City area or is Newcastle. No place there outside APRA's "Major Cities" group had a branch in June 2017, so they are not part of this study. I left out the places APRA puts in its Major Cities group. Some suburbs of regional cities are still in the count, for example Burdell and Deeragun in Townsville.
Details: on a computer, hover over a dot or a region. Tap or click to open the details below the map. You can also search for a place or open the table at the bottom of this page. A ⚑ means the place has a note: other records disagree with the register, the evidence is open, the place is part of a city, it is a part-time agency or it is a special case.
What this map does not show
The list is a photo taken once a year in June. It cannot show the exact day a branch closed.
The June 2020 and 2021 lists counted branches shut for COVID as open. So some places that lost their branch in 2020 may show up in a later year.
APRA lists a Bank@Post counter at the post office in 118 of the 129 places. The map counts bank branches only.
A "place" is a suburb or locality name in APRA's list. I count places outside the big cities whose nearest open branch in June 2026 is at least 5 km away in a straight line. Every number on this map uses this same rule. The study leaves out the records APRA codes as "Other" (Jervis Bay, Christmas Island and Norfolk Island).
